Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR)

Phoebus Software recognise the importance of having a positive impact on the lives of others and try to do this through our business processes and engagement with the local community and beyond.

We take our Corporate Social Responsibility very seriously which is clear from the commitment of our staff and from the many charitable initiatives with which we are involved.

For example, PSL supports Kiva – an organisation that allows people to lend money via the internet to microfinance institutions (MFLs) in developing countries, which in turn lend money to small businesses.

In 2019, PSL  won the Solihull BID Corporate Social Responsibility award and have previously won the Corporate Social Responsibility award at the Mortgage Finance Gazette Awards in 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018 and 2021.

We have recently built on our CSR offering and developed an ESG strategy: ‘Developing our Future’ focusing on four key areas: charity, staff wellbeing, education and the environment.

Charity Commitment

Charity and community are at the heart of our business and we continue to help those in need through fundraising and staff involvement. Our charity committee, which is run by our employees, organise the annual ‘Charity of the Year’ and set a fundraising target to be achieved.

2019 and 2020 Fundraising:

Our two year partnership with Acorns Children’s Hospice over the course of  2019 and 2020 involved employees at PSL raising a combined total of just over £15,500 through participating in many fundraising activities.

2021 Fundraising:

During 2021, PSL supported the UK’s largest charity fighting hunger and food waste, FareShare. Our charity committee set a fundraising target of £10,000 for the year and were thrilled to exceed this amount by raising a total of £10,380. This amount equates to 41,520 meals being provided to vulnerable families throughout the UK.

41,520 meals will feed 28 families of 4 for a whole year!

2022 Fundraising:

PSL employees have selected The Birmingham Children’s Hospital Charity as the company charity for 2022.

Take a look at how we got on with our 10,000 steps a day challenge in February:

Carbon Neutral

PSL has been carbon neutral since 2010. We continue to ensure our environmental footprint is as small as possible. We joined an offsetting scheme to counteract our carbon footprint completely by building efficient stoves for families in Kenya to replace fuel-intensive open fires and reduce firewood needed by over 50%.

Other initiatives include using recycled single-use cups, removing 80% of all waste, acquiring only the most energy-efficient equipment, limited printing and installing motion lighting in our office. We also encourage employees to participate in a cycle-to-work scheme.

Local Education Development

A key focus at PSL is to support STEM learning activity in schools and universities across the Midlands. We actively build partnerships with local education providers and take an active role in the support and development of local business enterprise.

PSL is a member of Aston University Computer Science Industry Club.

“The Computer Science Industry Club at Aston brings together students, academics and industry professionals. We work with our partners across three key areas: research, curriculum development and employability. Phoebus joined the programme in 2016 and were instrumental to the Clubs early development, advising on the Industry Club format and how it should be pitched to businesses. They have supported us in various ways, by generously donating prizes for student competitions, and attending showcase events to provide students with valuable feedback. We also work closely with the recruitment team who have hired several Aston placement students and graduates. Our partnership with Phoebus adds enormous value to the student experience. We look forward to exploring new avenues for collaboration, such as research, and continuing the positive and productive relationship we have with them.”

Usama, 2019
“Really enjoying the scheme so far. The rotational aspect is well thought out as it allows graduates to gain experience across different sectors within the company. The atmosphere within the company is brilliant and made it easy for me to settle in and feel like part of the team.”

Eastwood, 2019
“I love it, it is going really well. The fact that we will have an insight of different aspects of the business is extremely exciting.”
